Colon Capsule Endoscopy

RM Partners is participating in the NHS England colon capsule endoscopy pilot, introduced in 2021. This innovative test is being piloted as an alternative to traditional colonoscopy.

Traditional colonoscopy involves a hospital attendance for an outpatient procedure, where a hospital specialist inserts a telescope into the large intestine (colon) to look for any changes.

In colon capsule endoscopy, the patient swallows a small pill sized capsule containing a miniature camera which can provide a view of the digestive system, in a less invasive way. The imaging technology can provide a diagnosis within hours as images are transmitted to sensors attached to a data recorder worn by the patient. The capsule is disposable and is later passed in a bowel movement.

The new technology means that, after swallowing the capsule, patients can go about their normal day with minimal inconvenience.

The west London Trusts currently involved in the pilot during 2023/2024 include Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, and St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
