Data and intelligence high on palliative care agenda

Healthcare professionals across London came together at the recent RM Partners palliative care event to discuss the current situation on 7 day specialist palliative care and end of life care intelligence.

Mapping of 7 day specialist palliative care services across London and Greater Manchester found there was good participation and some improvement in 7 day provision both in hospitals and the community since previous mapping exercises. Also discussed was the work of the national team, which is working on definitions for specialist palliative care medical and nursing workforce. The findings will be presented at the Association of Palliative Medicine conference at the end of March.

There was also a focus on end of life care provision and associated data intelligence. RM Partners is preparing data packs for all providers and commissioners on the end of life care intelligence presented, to help them understand the likely needs of the local communities and assist them in determining the economic impact of implementing different types of end of life care models in community settings to deflect from acute hospital end of life care.

The event then was drawn to a close with an encouraging report on the evaluation of a new dementia service being run by Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice. This is a new service that demonstrates how integrated services open the door to earlier, more appropriate, community based services for people living with advanced dementia.
